  INTRODUCTION TO CORE FTP

Visit the Official CORE FTP Web Site to download the free version (lite version) of the program:  http://www.coreftp.com/

CORE FTP Caution: You are directly connected to the servers when you use this program. Any deletions and changes are permanent. Create a backup folder on the desktop of your computer and drag whatever you're going to delete into the folder BEFORE deleting it. For changes, save a copy of the original before uploading your changes. You will save yourself by following this advice.

CORE FTP is a useful program for uploading files to your web site.  It is NOT an editing program.  That means that you must edit your web site in another program, save your web site files, and then upload them to your server using CORE FTP.

1.  Double click on the Core FTP icon to start the program.

2.  In the site manager (below), press "New Site" and type in a Site Name (any name you can identify is fine), Host (yourwebsite.com), your user name, and your password.  Click "Connect."

3.  Your screen will look like the screen below.  The files on the left side of the screen, Side A, are the files located on your computer.  Side A is sometimes called the local file list.  The files on the right side of the screen, side B, are the files located on your web site server.  Side B is sometimes called a remote file list.   You can navigate these files using the navigation bars highlighted under the red lines.  Also, you can double click on yellow folders to open them.

The bottom portion of the screen, labeled C, will show any transfers that are happening between your computer and your server (So, transfers between side A and B are shown in panel C).

Files in Side A and Side B can be selected by clicking on them once.  Folders (also called directories) may be opened by clicking on them twice.

4.  Side A and Side B have certain buttons associated with them that help you to use Core FTP and exchange materials between Side A and Side B.
A.  Search Function
B.  Keep Alive Function
C.  Up Directory/Up Folder
D.  Make Directory/New Folder

-  Commence upload in one of three ways:  a.  Click on the transfer button (button M in description #4) located in the upper right hand corner of the file list on side A.  b.  Drag the files from the local file list (side A) to your desired location/folder in the the remote file list (side B).  C.  Right click on the files you want to upload and select "upload."

7.  Notes on the Logic of Uploading and Downloading in relation to web publishing.
a.  If the version of your web site on your server is different than the version of your web site on your personal (local) computer:  Make sure that you replace the conflicting files on your personal computer with the updated files from your server.  This can be done through a simple download without changing the file names.  When the computer asks you if you would like to replace the files on your personal computer with the new files, say yes.
b.  If the version of your web site on your personal computer is different than the version of your web site on your server:  Make sure that you replace the conflicting files on your server with the updated files from your personal computer.  This can be done through a simple upload without changing the file names.  When the computer asks you if you would like to replace the files on your personal computer with the new files, say yes.
c.  If you are uploading a web page with pictures:  If the pictures are not already on the server, you must upload them to the server.  Uploading the web page alone will not upload your pictures.
